presentationexpressions.com In this week's presentation tip video, I'm going to show you how to prepare a presentation about advertising and psychology. The following is from the original post on PresentationExpressions We're always happy to get questions from you, and we usually answer your questions in the comments or by email. But we don't often make videos to directly address your questions, so... We're going to do that today. We got a message from Soul, someone in the PresentationExpressions community. And Soul, wrote... "Hello, I have a presentation about advertising and psychology and I have to not talk about it in general but choose something specific under that subject. And the presentation will be around 7-8 slides without the introduction and the sources, and I can't use any words in those 7-8 slides, pictures only. The problem is I don't know what to talk about, and I dont know where to get pictures or a short video that uses psychological tricks. Help!!! Thank you Regards, Soul" Soul, thanks so much for your message. After getting that message, I told Soul I would make a video and Soul replied that the presentation is due on Tuesday. Well, it's Friday night here in Korea, so hopefully you'll have enough time to get everything ready. But I have to give you a bit of heck for starting your preparation so late. So don't do it again! Anyway, watch the video for these 5 Steps: Step 1: Figure out who your target audience is supposed to be. Step 2: Choose a specific ... |

British scientists in January reported details of the world's deepest volcanic vents. These passageways were discovered in 2010 in a narrow valley at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea. The vents release very hot liquid minerals. But they are surrounded by sea creatures, including shrimp and snails. The volcanic vents were discovered near the bottom of the Cayman Trough -- an undersea area south of the Cayman Islands. Jon Copley is a marine biologist at the University of Southampton in England. He spoke to VOA on Skype: JON COPLEY: "Deep sea vents are hot springs on the ocean floor. So they're a little bit like the geysers you might know from Yellowstone Park in the USA, except they're underwater, so they're not erupting steam. They're erupting really hot fluid, that's still liquid, but it's laden with dissolved minerals that form particles that looked like smoke and that's why we nicknamed them 'black smokers'." The British scientists believe the vents are releasing copper and other dissolved minerals. They estimate that the dark material is hotter than 450 degrees Celsius. JON COPLEY: "That's the temperature - the kind of temperatures you get right at the very throat of the vent, where the hot fluid is gushing out of the earth's crust. But the animals don't live there. They live a little bit further away. A few meters away the temperature is down to 20 to 40 degrees (Celsius)." Nearby, in cooler waters, the scientists found many marine animals, including a new species of ... |

MARIO RITTER: Salsa is a house cat. She belongs to Chris Condetti. We asked Chris what Salsa means to his family. CHRIS CONDETTI: "She is part of the family. She's always with us." MARIO RITTER: Many people treat their pets like family members. Americans spend large amounts of money on health care for pets. They spent $13 billion on veterinary care in 2010. But the health of animals also has a big influence on medical care for people. At the University of Missouri, Doctor Kim Selting recently completed a study on cancer in cats. DOCTOR KIM SELTING: "I think the value of what happens for the health of a pet and how it might translate to human health has come very much to the forefront." MARIO RITTER: Veterinarians study information about animal health from across the United States. At the National Institutes of Health, or NIH, Doctor Chand Khanna tests new cancer drugs for dogs. He says those tests may help people with cancer. DOCTOR CHAND KHANNA: "For the most part, almost every human cancer that occurs, occurs in the dog." MARIO RITTER: Veterinarians can do many of the same tests on dogs and cats that doctors can do on human patients. Doctor Khanna says bone cancer develops in the same way in dogs and humans. DOCTOR CHAND KHANNA: "We've looked at molecular profiles of dog osteosarcoma and human osteosarcoma and we really can't distinguish the dog and the human." MARIO RITTER: And, both species react to drugs. DOCTOR CHAND KHANNA: "Our focus has really been on therapy ... |

This is the VOA Special English Health Report from voaspecialenglish.com | http Officials in the United States say deadly abuse of painkillers and other prescription drugs has reached epidemic levels. More than thirty-six thousand people died from drug overdoses in two thousand eight, the latest year available. That was almost as many as from road crashes. More than half of the overdoses involved drugs that need a doctor's approval. And three-fourths of those deaths involved what are called opioid pain relievers. These include drugs like methadone; morphine; hydrocodone, also known as Vicodin; and oxycodone, or OxyContin. Death rates from prescription drugs were highest among people forty-five to fifty-four years old.A recent government report said painkiller deaths more than tripled in the past decade. They now top the number of heroin and cocaine deaths combined. The Obama administration released a plan last year to try to deal with the problem. Some abusers seek help at places like the Malibu Beach Recovery Center near Los Angeles. They learn yoga and other ways to deal with anxiety, stress and pain. Joan Borsten heads the center. She says stopping is difficult because "in the case of pain pills, the body has stopped producing its natural defenses to pain," and users have to have more and more. Around the country, special drug courts work with addicts to get them counseling and treatment. Mary Ann Gunn is a retired drug-court judge. She now appears on "Last Shot With ... |

Daniel Kwon even went so far as to declare: I'm definitely going to try to study English at least an hour a day. And Tuti Riel says: My New Year's resolution is to be able to speak English and Mandarin fluently, and be a better person. Juwita Zulmi says she wants to improve her English and get a scholarship to study overseas. Another goal for twenty-twelve: a new boyfriend. Derly Johanna Barreto has these two resolutions: to speak English fluently and to get a job. Jiseon Kim also has two goals: to lose weight and improve speaking English. And Katie Chekalina has these resolutions: Don't eat meat. I'll take it easy. Then, to learn Spanish or Italian, and find my real love. The last ones will be the most difficult, she thinks. Rafa Mtz's main goal is finishing high school and getting into a university. Lola Wazqito Oktobrata says: I am going to get married and finish my undergraduate study with good results. This is the VOA Special English Economics Report from voaspecialenglish.com | http In early January, President Obama appointed Richard Cordray as director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. This new government agency says it has already made home loans and credit card agreements easier for Americans to understand. But the Obama administration said the bureau cannot supervise financial products like home loans without a director. The president used a measure known as a recess appointment to fill the position. He nominated Mr. Cordray last July. But the opposition Republican Party blocked a vote in the full Senate.Mr. Obama announced the appointment during a visit to Ohio. It was his first political campaign trip of the year. He told the crowd that the severe economic crisis three years ago did not happen because of too many financial rules. Mr. Obama said: "Does anyone think the reason why we got into such a financial mess, the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, the worst economic crisis in a generation, that the reason was because of too much oversight of the financial industry? Of course not. We shouldn't be weakening oversight, we shouldn't be weakening accountability, we should be strengthening it!"Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell criticized the president's appointment. Many Republicans oppose the new agency, saying its goals are not clear. They also want a group of people to lead the agency instead of a single director. The Consumer ... |

This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report from voaspecialenglish.com | http Many people have lettuce in a salad at the beginning of a meal. The ancient Egyptians and Romans had it at the end. Either way, gardening experts say lettuce is one of the easiest vegetables to grow in a garden. There are hundreds of kinds of head and leaf lettuces besides the most popular choices, like iceberg, Boston, bibb and romaine. The best time to plant the seeds is during cool weather. Gardening advisers at the University of Illinois Extension say the best planting temperature is fifteen degrees Celsius. You can use a seed tray to start the seeds indoors. The container should be deep enough to hold at least three centimeters of soil. Leave about one centimeter of space between the soil and the top of the container. The container should have holes in the bottom so extra water can flow out. Cover the seeds lightly with soil. If the soil is not already a little wet, give it some water, but not too much. Too much water could drown the seeds. Next, cover the seed tray with paper. Remove the paper when the seedlings are tall enough to touch it. You can transplant the seedlings into the garden when they are about two to three centimeters tall. Do this when the weather is not too hot and not too cold. Take out as much of the soil as you can with the seedlings. Plant them in the ground in a hole that is bigger than the lettuce roots. Keep the plants watered, but not too heavily. Planting ... |

This is the VOA Special English Technology Report from voaspecialenglish.com | http The modern way to collect signatures on a petition requires no paper or pen or standing on a street for hours. Change.org and other websites let people start or sign online petitions. There are many different reasons why people start petitions at Change.org. The top causes range from animal protection to criminal justice to women's rights. Lauren Todd of New York started a petition a few months ago after she saw a picture of a girls shirt on Facebook. The shirt read: "I'm too pretty to do homework, so my brother has to do it for me." As Ms. Todd told CBS television, "It was outrageous enough to be posted on Facebook, but it was actually more outrageous than that, and I felt like I needed to do something about it." Her petition urged shoppers to boycott JC Penney stores until they stopped selling shirts with what she called sexist messages. Five hours later, Shelby Knox started tweeting about the petition to her thousands of Twitter followers. Ms. Knox is the director of women's rights organizing for Change.org. Some of her followers also started tweeting about the shirt and signing the petition. Ms. Knox says, "From the time that Lauren started the petition on Change.org and JC Penney pulled the shirt, it was about ten hours, in which it got over two thousand signatures and at one point was generating over four hundred tweets a minute." She said that with each new signature, an e-mail ... |
